ASPHYX "Death … The Brutal Way" - (Asphyx, the gods of death, who appear to have split up more times than they were actually together, are back again! I think this is the fifth reunion and they have unleashed their first full-length in nine years, and yes, it krushes everything!!! this new record is pure Asphyx and freaking brilliant and heavier than morbidly obese blue whales. Martin Van Drunen from Pestilence, Comecon and Bolt Thrower is back on the mic and he sounds sicker than a pandemic. this may seriously be the best death metal album of 2009, if not the best album of the year, as every songs is an instant classic of death and doom, with most of the songs obviously being about death, doom and war. best tracks are "scorbutics", "the herald" and "bloodswamp" - the latter of which has this doom breakdown halfway through that will make you poop. continuing with the best tracks - you have two speedsters - "eisenbahnmorser", and the title track, which was issued as their first single since 1990's "mutilating process." the other best tracks are "cape horn", "black hole storm" and "riflegun redeemer". this is the epitome of what everything death metal is supposed to be about! heck, and it comes with a bonus DVD of pristine quality of their comeback show from 2007 at the party.san festival in front of what had to be 20,000 maniacs. unfortunately, the set list is all culled from the records Van Drunen was on - "the rack" and "the last one on earth", but those discs are both classics, so it is great to see these dirges like "vermin", "wasteland of terror", MSM Bismarck", "serenade in lead", "the krusher", "pages in blood" and "food for the ignorant" live. again, this is an essential purchase, support death done the brutal way!!!)
